Stem, NC

A railroad spur and a family store gave Stem its first shape in Granville County. William Thomas Stem established it as a separate place in 1888 where the Richmond and Danville Railroad spur ended; the town incorporated in 1911. The old Tally Ho name still belongs to the surrounding story, and the Cozart-Coley House keeps a Victorian piece of the town’s past in downtown. Stem’s 2020 population was 960, and the town sits near I-85 between Butner, Creedmoor, Oxford, and Durham.

Current town life is practical and close to the municipal map: Stem operates its own water and sewer system, streets, fire protection, and police department. Children are assigned to Butner-Stem or West Oxford elementary schools, Granville Central Middle, and J.F. Webb High. The town’s most memorable local legend is the 1936 story of Stem High School’s basketball team beating UNC in an improvised game; even the town’s own account notes that the story is unverified. A traveler can still connect the old rail stop to the town hall, the Cozart-Coley House, and the school roads.
