Sterling, NE

In 2020, Sterling had 482 residents in Johnson County’s Nemaha River valley, about 14 miles northwest of Tecumseh. The village was platted in 1870 when the Atchison and Nebraska Railroad reached this part of the county. Its name came from a coin toss: William Mann, John Bentz, and William Kneeland flipped a $20 gold piece for naming rights, and Mann chose Sterling after his hometown in Illinois. Agriculture still frames the town, with open fields stretching out from the village streets.

Sterling’s biggest gathering is the Johnson County Fair, held each August with 4-H projects, livestock, carnival rides, a parade, and grandstand events. The village is also part of Sterling Public Schools, with elementary, middle, and high school classes. Nine miles away, Wirth Brothers Lake adds fishing, camping, a stocked lake, trails, a beach, and no-wake boating to the local outing list. The railroad gave Sterling its original line on the map; the fair, school, farm landscape, and lake keep that line connected to present-day life.
