Sundance, UT

Sundance is a Utah County mountain community built around Mount Timpanogos, alpine skiing, and one of the most recognizable independent-film stories in the country. Skiing began on the site in 1944, but the modern chapter started when Robert Redford found Provo Canyon in 1961, bought the area in 1969, and shaped Sundance Mountain Resort around the idea of preserving more land than it developed. The Sundance Institute held its first filmmakers lab here in 1981, tying the resort to the film culture that later gave the festival its name. Sundance is part mountain retreat, part arts campus, and part protected Wasatch landscape - a very specific Utah place with a much larger cultural shadow.
