Swan Lake, MT

Swan Lake is a Lake County community on the east shore of the lake's southern end, where the Swan Range rises along the Lake-Flathead county line. The place developed around 1905, when loggers and the Great Northern Railway's timber operations made the lake a railhead for logs headed toward Somers. Local name lore splits between Emmett Swan, an early resident, and trumpeter swans on the lake; either way, water, timber, and mountains are inseparable from the place.

Today the lake and forest set the rhythm. Hiking, horseback riding, fishing, boating, and wildlife watching carry people through the seasons, with the Bob Marshall Wilderness area and national forest nearby. The Swan Lake Community Center, next to the fire hall, hosts receptions, meetings, and special events. That pairing - working timber history on one side, outdoor recreation and a small gathering hall on the other - gives Swan Lake its recognizable local shape. It is an unincorporated Montana community that grew from a railroad timber stop and now lives by the same lake and mountain country that first drew people there.
