Sweetser, IN

Sweetser is a Grant County town spread across Franklin, Pleasant, and Richland townships, between Converse and Marion on State Road 18. The 2020 census counted 1,075 residents. The town's most distinctive piece of infrastructure is the Sweetser Switch Trail, a paved rail trail running beside the active railroad and connecting toward the Cardinal Greenway. Sweetser Elementary belongs to Oak Hill United School Corporation, and the trailhead, town hall, cafe, Main Street, and school give the community a recognizable everyday center.

The railroad reached the area in 1867, and a half-mile switch built around 1869 hauled wood to a train refueling station. The original town plat followed in 1871. Railroad language stuck, even as the name shifted from Switch to Switzer and then Sweetser. Today the trail carries that history with a 1916 wooden caboose, restored rail cars, bridges, and access points near town hall. The annual Pumpkin Walk brings a late-October parade, costumes, carving contests, and a pumpkin-lit route, while the summer farmers market sets up at Sweetser Elementary. Sweetser still carries its railroad-town character through the trail, school, and seasonal events.
