Tariffville, CT

Tariffville is a neighborhood and census-designated place in northeastern Simsbury, tucked inside a bend of the Farmington River. The 2020 census counted 1,324 residents. The river is more than scenery here: its gorge supplied the waterpower for a carpet mill opened by Tariff Manufacturing Company in 1825. The company's name came from the Tariff Act of 1824, which put protective duties on wool and cotton textiles. That is the kind of local detail that makes Tariffville feel distinct from the rest of Simsbury—the name, the mill village, and the river all come from the same industrial moment. Part of the original village is preserved in the Tariffville Historic District, while the river draws whitewater paddlers through the gorge.

Tariffville Park provides river access, and the neighborhood's roads climb toward Talcott Mountain and connect north toward East Granby. Newer development sits outside the historic core, so the place has a clear old center without being frozen in time. Simsbury's services and schools handle the larger civic structure, but Tariffville keeps its own village association, river habits, and mill-era layout.
