About The Silos
The Silos is a Broadwater County CDP on the west shore of Canyon Ferry Lake, and the name is not a metaphor—the brick silos are the landmark. A. B. Cook built the 40-foot-plus structures around 1920 for a sheep ranch along the Missouri River. Canyon Ferry Dam changed the landscape in the 1950s, leaving the silos as reminders of the ranching era while the surrounding place grew into a lakeside community. U.S. 12/287 runs through the CDP, with Townsend five miles southeast and Helena farther northwest. The Silos is Montana map shorthand for lake water, an old ranch, and two brick towers that refused to disappear.
