Thompson Falls, MT

Thompson Falls is Sanders County's seat in western Montana's Clark Fork Valley, where the river runs along the south side of town and natural falls give the city its name. The 2020 census counted 1,336 people. David Thompson established the Saleesh House fur-trading post here in 1809, tying the place to the early fur trade before it became a county-seat town. The Cabinet Mountains rise nearby, and the city sits at about 2,419 feet above sea level. Current routines run through county and city offices, schools, and the river corridor.

Thompson Falls Public Schools runs elementary, middle, and high schools, while the city keeps a trails map and a downtown plan aimed at connecting the center with nearby businesses, museums, and the River Front Trail. Thompson Falls State Park covers 36 acres and includes a fishing pond, picnic shelter, campground, and the nonmotorized Thompson Falls Trail along the Clark Fork, continuing toward the Highway 200 trail into town. It is a county-seat community with the courthouse and downtown on one side of the map and the river shaping the other.
