About Tolchester

Tolchester is a census-designated place commonly known as Tolchester Beach, set on the eastern shore of the Chesapeake Bay in Kent County just north of Rock Hall. Its waterfront history is unusually vivid. In 1877, the Tolchester Steamboat Company opened an amusement park and resort, and steamships made it a major weekend destination for visitors coming across the bay from Baltimore. At its height, the park drew as many as 20,000 people in a weekend before closing in 1962.

The amusement park is gone, but the shoreline remains tied to boats and bay weather. Tolchester Marina operates from Tolchester Beach Road with fuel, marine supplies, and services for people using the water, while fishing and cruising continue the old connection to the Chesapeake. The community’s present-day feel is more working waterfront than excursion resort: small roads, bay-facing homes, marinas, and long views across the water. A drive through the area can still make the old resort era easy to imagine, especially when the shoreline is busy with boats and the bay is doing what it has always done—bringing the outside world to Kent County.
