Topstone, CT

Topstone is a census-designated place on the west side of Redding, bordered by Ridgefield, with 113 residents at the 2020 census. It is one of Connecticut's place names that carries both a neighborhood location and a longer transportation history: the Danbury and Norwalk Railroad reached Redding in 1852, with a depot at Topstone alongside stations in Georgetown and West Redding. Redding later adopted two-acre zoning outside Georgetown in 1953 as part of an effort to preserve its rural character.

The name is also attached to Topstone Park, a 274-acre town property off Topstone Road. The park grew from part of photographer Edward Steichen's estate, which Redding purchased in 1971; its principal feature is a 25-acre pond used for swimming and paddling. The trail system totals about 3.69 miles, including routes over Topstone Mountain with views toward Long Island Sound. The Redding Historical Society adds another nearby thread, preserving Lonetown Farm Museum and the Umpawaug Schoolhouse and hosting open houses and programs through the year.
