Troy, ID

Troy got its start in the rolling hills of the Idaho Palouse as a small settlement known as Huff's Gulch. The area transformed in 1890 when the railroad arrived under railroad baron John P. Vollmer, who promptly named the town after himself. The locals soon had other plans. Legend has it that a Greek railroad worker treated voters to drinks in exchange for their support to rename the town, and in 1897 Troy became the official choice. Fed by the rail line, sawmills, and grain harvests, the community quickly grew into a dependable agricultural hub.

Today, Troy keeps that down-to-earth character while offering a relaxed lifestyle about twelve miles east of Moscow. Walking down Main Street, you will find preserved brick buildings that reflect its early boom years alongside welcoming local businesses. The former railroad corridor is now the scenic Latah Trail, giving cyclists and walkers a paved route through the countryside. For newcomers, it is an inviting small town with deep historical roots, scenic surroundings, and an easy commute to nearby university amenities.
