Tsaile, AZ

Tsaile sits in Apache County on the Navajo Nation, about 29 miles east of Chinle and just outside Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Route 12 and Navajo Route 64 frame the community, with the Chuska Mountain Range providing the larger horizon. Tsaile is a place where the regional road map, the reservation, and an educational campus meet.

Diné College’s main campus is the town’s defining institution. Founded in 1968 as Navajo Community College, it was the first tribally controlled community college in the United States; today the Tsaile campus has student dormitories, a cafeteria, academic programs, student activities, and teams in rodeo, archery, and cross-country. The college serves residents across the Navajo Nation in Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah, with programs tied to the nation’s educational, cultural, economic, and social needs. At Tsaile/Wheatfields Chapter, local life includes chapter business, health council work, agriculture and land-grant programs, Tsaile Public School, and the wider Chinle Unified School District. The Ned Hatathli Museum at Diné College preserves and promotes Diné cultural heritage and history.
