Tully, NY

Tully is the village at the heart of the larger Town of Tully in Onondaga County, south of Syracuse. The name comes from Marcus Tullius Cicero, a Roman reference chosen during the Military Tract surveys. The village was established in 1875, after David Owen’s 1795 log cabin and the town’s 1803 organization had already set the broader settlement in motion. Tully’s location is part of the story: roads run through a long glacial valley, while the village sits near Tully Lake and the chain of nearby lakes formed in the old meltwater landscape.

The lake side is where the local character opens up. Tully Lake Park began taking shape in the late 1880s, with cottages, a hotel, walks, and drives; Assembly Park followed on the lake’s east side in 1892 with educational sessions modeled on Chautauqua. Today, Cornerstone Park and its Memory Walk give the village an everyday gathering spot, and the Tully Historical Society keeps the Roman-named community and its lake history connected. It’s a compact Central New York village with a crossroads feel, a long school tradition, and a lake story bigger than its map footprint.
