Ulm, MT

Ulm is a Cascade County census-designated place on the Missouri River, about 12 miles southwest of Great Falls and part of that city's metro orbit. The 2020 census counted 723 residents. The community began as Indiana-born cattleman William Ulm's large ranch; the post office opened in 1883, the Montana Central Railway arrived in 1887, and a bridge across the Missouri followed in 1914. Those dates tell the local story neatly: ranch, mail stop, rail stop, river crossing.

Today Interstate 15 passes through Ulm at Exit 270, while the surrounding benchlands still carry wheat and cattle country. The Missouri offers fishing and float access, and nearby First Peoples Buffalo Jump State Park gives the area a much older human history than the post office or railroad. Cascade Public Schools serves students from kindergarten through 12th grade, including nearby Deep Creek, Craig, and Wolf Creek. Ulm has the feel of a place built around movement, but it is not anonymous: the bridge, river, railroad-era name, and wide agricultural edge give this small Great Falls-area community a distinct outline.
