Vaughn, MT

Vaughn is a Cascade County census-designated place along the Sun River west of Great Falls, with the river running just south of town before it reaches the Missouri. The name comes from Welsh immigrant Robert Vaughn, who filed a homestead there in 1869, when this stretch was still part of huge Chouteau County. Vaughn and nearby settlers built an irrigation ditch for barley, oats, potatoes, and wheat, then cattle and horse ranching gave the valley another line of work. The town's beginnings are tied to land, water, and a road through the river country.

That older landscape still helps decode Vaughn. The Sun River Crossing area and the old Mullan Trail belong to the valley's travel history, while the Vaughn Ranch story is kept alive through the homestead and local historical work. Today the CDP sits in the Great Falls orbit without turning into a city neighborhood: fields, ranches, the river, and small local businesses remain the main reference points. If you drive through, the giveaway is simple—the Sun River is just south, and the town name points back to one of the early homesteaders who decided this was a place to stay.
