Waitsfield, VT

Waitsfield is the village-center census-designated place in the Mad River Valley, where Vermont Route 100 meets Bridge Street and the Mad River bends through the valley floor. The Great Eddy covered bridge is the most recognizable crossing, and the village grew as a commercial center for the surrounding farm communities in the early nineteenth century. Joslin Memorial Library, built in 1913, the General Wait House, and the Waitsfield Village Historic District keep that older village pattern visible.

The village streets lead toward the town office, meeting house, library, small businesses, and the road that follows the river. The wider valley adds nearby Sugarbush and Mad River Glen, along with lodging, restaurants, and outdoor routes, but the village itself remains the place where local errands and town notices come together. Bridge conditions and traffic along Route 100 are part of ordinary local planning, just as the covered bridge and the library are part of the valley's memory. Waitsfield's center works as a compact meeting point between the river, the mountains, and the long north-south road.
