West Glacier, MT

West Glacier sits at the western doorway to Glacier National Park, where U.S. 2 and the BNSF main line meet the roads leading into the mountains. The community was once called Belton, and the Great Northern Railway’s arrival in 1890 changed the area from a hard-to-reach valley into a destination with a steady flow of visitors. When Glacier National Park was established in 1910, Belton became a primary gateway and the park’s headquarters took shape nearby. The name West Glacier came later, adopted by residents in 1949 as the community leaned into its relationship with the park.

That relationship still shapes the local calendar. Park employees, guides, lodging operators, restaurant crews, shuttle drivers, railroad workers, and year-round residents share a place whose summer population rises sharply with visitation. The National Park Service headquarters is a workplace as well as a landmark, with administrative staff reporting there daily, while nearby businesses handle the practical needs of travelers heading toward Going-to-the-Sun Road and the park’s west side. Winter changes the pace and narrows the customer base, but the highway and rail line keep the community connected to Flathead County. West Glacier is a gateway town in the literal sense, yet its local life depends on the work behind the scenery: staffing, maintenance, transport, housing, and the routines that make a seasonal landscape function.
