West Kootenai, MT

West Kootenai occupies the western shore of Lake Koocanusa in northern Lincoln County, where the Kootenai River broadens into a long reservoir beneath the Kootenai National Forest. The setting is remote even by northwest Montana standards, and that remoteness shaped the community’s institutional history: West Kootenai once hosted an all-boys boarding school because students could not easily reach larger towns. The reservoir arrived with Libby Dam in the 1970s, changing the river valley and placing lake access beside an older forest and ranch landscape.

Today the road into West Kootenai leads toward water, woods, and working country. Lake Koocanusa supports boating, fishing, camping, and scenic drives, while the forest holds trails, wildlife habitat, and backroads used by hunters and residents. The community is linked to Rexford and the Lake Koocanusa Scenic Byway, but its character stays spread across homes, shoreline, and mountain clearings. A visitor may come for the reservoir; residents also live with the practical rhythms of snow, timber, long distances, and a landscape that still sets the terms of daily life.
