West Milton, PA

West Milton sits in Union County on the west side of the West Branch Susquehanna River, directly across from Milton in Northumberland County. The river gives the community its name and much of its map: U.S. Route 15 runs through the area, the riverfront opens toward Montgomery Island, and Milton State Park occupies that island between the two places. West Milton belongs to Kelly and White Deer townships, so it works as a named community inside a larger township pattern.

Montgomery Island carries its own long story. Marcus Huling Jr. claimed it in 1762 and planted an apple orchard; later mills, farms, floods, and athletic fields changed its use before Milton transferred the island to the Commonwealth in 1966. Hurricane Agnes covered the island in 1972, and state-park facilities were rebuilt afterward. West Milton’s school lines split between Lewisburg Area and Milton Area districts, reflecting its location between township and river communities. The result is a place whose everyday view is unusually open: fields and homes on one bank, Milton across the water, and a public island in the middle.
