About West Rutland

West Rutland is the central village and CDP in the town of West Rutland, with 1,898 residents in the 2020 census. It sits in a valley east of the Taconic Mountains, with Route 4 running through the village toward Rutland and Fair Haven. The place grew around marble: quarries once filled the streets with immigrant labor and industrial work, and the stone still shows up in buildings and local landmarks. Marble Street remains a literal address in the village center, keeping the old industry in the street map.

The commercial quarries are closed, but the marble story still has a current life. A quarry monument stands at Barnes and Marble Streets, and the Carving Studio & Sculpture Center occupies a former quarry site with marble sculpture on its grounds. The town also has a school that teaches marble sculpting, small artist galleries, a recreation director, and a fire department. West Rutland's local character comes from that handoff from quarry town to village of artists, civic services, and Route 4 traffic.
