Windsor, VT

Windsor is the main settlement within the town of Windsor in Windsor County, Vermont, a census-designated place on the west bank of the Connecticut River. The 2020 Census counted 2,139 people in the CDP. U.S. 5 runs through the village, with Vermont 44 heading west toward Brownsville and South Reading. Across the river is Cornish, New Hampshire, reached by the Cornish–Windsor Covered Bridge, the long timber crossing that has become the town's visual calling card.

Windsor's deeper claim on Vermont history comes from the Old Constitution House. In 1777, delegates met there to declare the Vermont Republic's independence, and Windsor was later a center of trade, manufacturing, and machine-tool innovation. The village grew along river, road, and rail routes: a toll bridge stood here by 1796, and the Vermont Central Railroad followed in the nineteenth century. Today the old village streets, the Connecticut River, and the American Precision Museum keep those layers close together. It is a compact river settlement with a surprisingly large role in how Vermont organized itself.
